Cockshaw Burn

Cockshaw Burn is a small river in Northumberland which is a tributary of the River Tyne. The burn flows through Hexham, and soon after joins the River Tyne at Tyne Green Country Park. The Cockshaw Catchment Flood Alleviation Scheme (completed in c.2006) involved culverting sections of Cockshaw Burn and Halgut Burn. The Environment Agency worked in partnership with Commissions North (Arts Council England, North East) in a novel approach to bring together the creative potential of civil engineer and artist collaboration in the flood defence work. Artist-blacksmith Matthew Fedden worked with the scheme’s civil engineers to design a series of new trash screens which make visual allusion to water patterns and river flow. Also, between Sele Bridge and Glover’s Bridge, there are David Jacobson’s carved stones (granites imported from drought plagued countries of the world) are half submerged within the streambed.[1] Also, in the catchment area is Wydon Water - a re-constructed reservoir at the head of the Wydon Burn, with high banks designed to retain higher water levels in times of heavy rain, to reduce the risk of flooding in Hexham.
