Clarendon House, Clayton Street West

Clarendon House on the corner of Clayton Street West and Bewick Street in Newcastle was originally built as a temperence hotel. It was designed by Oliver and Leeson for Joseph Cowen in 1896. The red brick  'Arts and Crafts' style building was converted into offices in 1923. It was subsequently converted into flats in 1986-87. The building stands on the site of John Knox Chapel, designed by John Dobson, which was demolished to build this temperence hotel.[1] Clarendon House is inclided on the List of buildings of Local Architectural or Historic Interest for Newcastle.
