Church of St Peter
St Peter's Church in Bywell, Northumberland, dates from Anglo Saxon times, probably the 8th century.[1] It originally belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Durham and in 803 AD was the location of Bishop Egbert's consecration as 12th Bishop of Lindisfarne. Much of the church was rebuilt after a fire 1285. Excavations in 1995 uncovered extensive foundations of the Saxon chancel, and Roman stones suggest that the church stands on a much earlier Roman site.[2] The church is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
