Church of St James, Hamsterley
St. James' Church is located about ½ mile east of Hamesterly. The Parish Church was built in the 13th Century, possibly incorporating fragments of an earlier church.[1] The building was altered in the 19th Century; a sundial over the porch door is inscribed "MAN FLEETH AS IT WERE A SHADOW' 1803".[2] The Rev James George Milner was appointed as the first resident "Perpetual Curate of Hamsterley" in 1825. He remained curate of the church until he died in 1885, at the age of 89.[3] A stone in the porch door notes that the church was "RESTORED IN THE 60TH YEAR OF THE REVD J.G.MILNER'S INCUMBENCY AD 1884". St James' Church is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England. The churchyard has several 18th century tombs, 9 of which are Grade II listed. The church register dates from 1588.
