Church of St Cuthbert, Nether Denton

St Cuthbert's Church is the parish church of Nether Denton and stands on the site of a Roman fort. It is located in an isolated position, near the hamlet of Chapelburn, about 1 mile north-west of the village of Low Row. The church is situated on high ground, by the south banks of the River Irthing, close to where Chapel Burn joins the Irthing. The current church was built 1868-1870 by Cory & Ferguson of Carlisle for the Mounsey family. There has been a church here since the 12th century and the present church has a Norman sculpture of a King with sceptre on cross. The church is substantially built from salvaged Roman stone from the fort here, which was on Stanegate. It's chancel has a barrel-vaulted roof and the font dates from 1702. The east and south windows have stained glass by C.A. Gibbs, London. St Cuthbert's Church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
