Carlisle Archive Centre

Carlisle Archive Centre is located at Lady Gillford's House on Petteril Bank Road in Carlisle. The archive includes original documents from the 12th century to the present day, relating to the part of the historic county of Cumberland, which is north of the River Derwent; including the areas around Carlisle, Keswick, Penrith, Maryport and Wigton. Carlisle Archive Centre had previously been based in the Alma Block at Carlisle Castle, now in this purpose-built modern extension adjoining Lady Gillford's House, which opened to the public in 2011.

Carlisle Archive Centre is one of 4 archive centres in Cumbria (the others being at Barrow, Kendal and Whitehaven). Since the abolition of Cumbria County Council in April 2023, Cumbria Archives and the 4 archive centres have been supported by the 2 'new' unitary authorities (Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council). The 'new' unitary authority areas have different boundaries compared to the historic counties of Cumberland and Westmorland.
