Captain's Tower and Inner Bailey, Carlisle Castle

The Captain's Tower is the main gateway into the inner bailey of Carlisle Castle. The inner bailey is roughly triangular in shape, comprising north, south and west walls. Its walls date from the 12th century and were partially rebuilt in the 19th century. The Captain's Tower dates from the 13th century, with 14th century modifications and some later alterations. On the angle of the south and north walls was Queen Mary's Tower which had to be demolished in 1834-5 and rebuilt in 1835. The Captains Tower and inner bailey walls are Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
