Bridge over outer moat, Carlisle Castle
There is a stone bridge over the outer moat at Carlisle Castle, leading to the main gateway ino the castle through De Irebys Tower. This was originally a drawbridge, but was converted to a overbridge in the late 18th century. The bridge retains some of its medieval elements, with late 18th century additions. At the base of the bridge are the old drawbridge abutments. The bridge was heightened between 1778-1791 and a brick arch added. A watercolour of the Castle by Robert Carlyle shows the arched bridge in 1791, but this not on Hearne's earlier engraving of 1778.[1] The bridge is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
