Blencathra Building, Carlisle

The Blencathra Building in Carlisle is on the Fusehill Street Campus of the University of Cumbria. The building was originally the hospital wing of the Union Workhouse (now Skiddaw Building), both built 1863-1864, designed by Lockwood & Mawson (architects). The main workhouse building later became Carlisle City General Hospital, whilst this hospital wing became Carlisle City Maternity Hospital. The Maternity Hospital and adjacent Carlisle City General Hospital closed in 1999, when hospital care was consolidated at the new Cumberland Infirmary. The Fusehill site then became the Carlisle campus of St. Martin’s College. The college then became part of the University of Cumbria when it was established in 2007. The Blencathra Building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
