Bishop's Registry, Carlisle


Adjacent to the Abbey Gatehouse in Carlisle is the small "Bishop's Registry" building of 1699. This is the former Cathedral library, at one time used as a registry, now unoccupied. The building is dated and inscribed over the entrance "THOMAS CARLIOL AD 1699" (Thomas Smith, the Bishop of Carlisle). The Bishop's Registry is a Grade II* listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
