Birdoswald Farmhouse

Birdoswald Farmhouse is situated within the ruins of the Banna Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall. The farmhouse seen today, including the tower, was built in 1858, but incorporates parts of a much earlier building, dating back to at least the 17th century. It's previous use as a farmhouse indicates the long-established and continuous occupation of this site from Roman times. It's owner in the 19th century, Henry Norman, was an antiquarian who conducted his own excavation of the adjacent Roman fort. The 'tower house' is an example of Victorian 'medieval reconstruction', although it is uncertain if there was an earlier tower here, it was possibly the remains of an earlier hall range.[1] Birdoswald Farmhouse is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The building became the base of English Heritage's archaeological unit. It is now also available for self-catered group accommodation.
