Bell's Close

Bell's Close is an area of Newcastle, immediately west of Scotswood and east of Lemington. Bell's Close, Lemmington and Sugley were originally 3 seperate villages, which became part of Newcastle in 1974, and are now more or less a continuous urban area. Originally little more than a farm, by the 19th century, Bell's Close had grown into a small settlement of terraced houses and cottages along the riverside, surrounded by clay and coal mines (including Montague Colliery), brickworks, copperas works and other factories. The village of Bell's Close had two churches; a Wesleyan Methodist Church built in 1839 (no longer exant) and St George’s RC Church was built in 1869 to meet the needs of the many Irish immigrant families who came to work in the riverside industries here. In the mid 19th century the Longboat Inn and the Rokeby Arms public houses were located here. Also, there was once a ferry, and later a wooden bridge, from Bell's Close to Canary Island (by what is now Lemington Gut).
