Allendale Village Hall

Allendale Village Hall and Recreation Ground are located on Leadgate (B6303) in Allendale Town. The building was originally constructed as a Temperance Hall in 1905. The land was donated by Mr Robert Pickering of Deneholme House, and after 2 years of fundraising by the local temperance movement, the foundation stone was laid at a well attended ceremony on the 15th of June 1905 (see photos below from the Allen Valleys Local History Group). Just 4 months later, the hall was officially opened on the 7th October 1905. In 1945, Mr W Simpson and his sister, Constance donated a field adjacent to the hall which is now the Recreation Ground.[1] The hall was renamed Allendale Village Hall in 1973 and by that time was no longer part of the Temperance League. The 'New Hall' extension, providing a modern kitchen and changing rooms, was officially opened on the 23rd October 1993, following 3 years of community fund raising. Allendale Village Hall and Recreation Ground is a registered charity, run by volunteers, which aims "to provide a meeting place, and recreation ground, for local community activities and pastimes and therefore to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the area."
