112-118 Grainger Street, Newcastle


Nos. 112-118 (even numbers) Grainger Street, Newcastle, were built as shops and houses in c.1836, The 4 storey building with 5 bays forms the curved corner of Grainger Street onto Market Street. The building is thought to have been designed by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger's redevelopment of the city centre. A photograph of 1910 shows the building hosting the Grainger Hotel. In the early 2000's the ground floor was Kook AI (clothes shop); more recently it is part of Start Fitness. Nos. 112-118 Grainger Street are Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.
