11 Hood Street, Northern Counties Club
No. 11, Hood Street in Newcastle was built in c.1839 as part of Richard Grainger's redevelopment of the city centre. It was originally houses and later became a hotel, at one time the Tyne Hotel. Since 1972, the building has been occupied by The Northern Counties Club. Architect, Peter Elphick (1920-2013) redesigned the interior of the building, set behind the existing Greek-style façade - his traditionally designed project was commended in the national list of finalists for the Times/RICS Awards in 1972.[1] The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
The Northern Counties Club was established in 1829 and is one of the oldest private members clubs. Prior to moving to Hood Street, the club was located in Old Eldon Square, moving in 1972 when parts of (old) Eldon Square were demolished when the shopping centre was developed. Historically, the club was the preserve of wealthy male businessmen. In 1999, rules were changed to allow female members, then in 2017, Lucy Winskell, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Northumbria University, was elected as the club's first female chair.[2]
