Winlaton Forge

Winlaton Forge is the last surviving link in the village with Crowley's Iron Works. Ambrose Crowley's works dominated the iron manufacturing trade in the North East throughout the 18th Century - Crowley's Iron Works at Winlaton, Winlaton Mill, and at Swalwell were probably, at the time, Europe's biggest industrial location. This small forge behind the library in Winlaton has been preserved. The forge is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
