Whale, Cumbria

Whale is a hamlet, located about 5 miles south of Penrith. It is situated by Whale Beck, close to it's confluence with the River Lowther. Whale Farmhouse and Whale Cottage here, date from the mid 18th century, and are listed buildings. In the past, Whale and the wider area formed a township in the ancient parish of Lowther. It was once held by the family called de Whale, but was owned the Earl of Lonsdale in the mid-19th century. Whellan's 1829 directory of Cumberland and Westmorland lists George Harrison, John Nelson, Richard Walker (farmers), and Thomas Walker (wheelright & joiner). Today, Whale and nearby Whalemoor, are part of Lowther Civil Parish and within the Westmorland & Furnesss Council area.
