Westgate Hill Cemetery
In June 1825 a meeting of 'protestant dissenters and other persons' was held in Newcastle, which appointed a committee to forming a new cemetery - John Fenwick proposed a commercial cemetery which was not to be consecrated, based on the example of Chorlton Row Cemetery in Manchester which had opened in 1821. Proposals for the new cemetery were published In September 1825 with subscribers to the scheme buying £10 shares to fund the purchasing of land. The Westgate Hill Cemetery Company purchased site here in Arthur's Hill / Summerhill, by Westgate Road, in December 1828. John Green was appointed as architect and William Falla advised on landscaping. The first burial took place in October 1829.[1] Westgate Hill Cemetery is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
