War Memorial, Hawkeys Lane

This war memorial stands outside the Health Centre on Hawkeys Lane in North Shields. The memorial, dedicated those lost in the First World War, was uveiled on the 28th April 1923 in a ceremony attended by The Duke of Northumberland, The Mayor and Mayoress of Tyneside (Councillor & Mrs John Frater). The memorial was later also dedicated to those lost in the Second World War. The War memorial, benches, walls, piers, terrace and steps are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The Victoria Jubliee Infirmary extension was opened on the 28th March 1925 by the Mayor of Tynemouth (Councillor A E Hill, J.P.), but this was demolished in c.2000.

TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED IN THE BOOK OF HONOUR TREASURED IN THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

THIS MONUMENT AND THE INFIRMARY EXTENSION WERE ERECTED AS THE TOWN'S WAR MEMORIAL IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.
