War Memorial, Crook
The Cenotaph in Crook occupies a prominent position in the town, at the centre of an open garden area between Church Street and North Street. The 18ft tall white granite memorial was designed by S. Webby, Liverpool. The memorial was unvield on the 11th November 1927 by Col. Stobart, C.B.E., D.S.O. of Harperly Hall and dedicated by the Bishop of Jarrow.[1] The memorial commemorates 160 local servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. Later, it was also inscribed with the names of 69 servicemen and 4 civillians who died in the Second World War, and one soldier killed in the Korean War (1950-1953).The War Memorial, piers and chain are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
