Wansbeck Railway


The Wansbeck Railway (or 'Wannie Line') was a single track railway, which ran from Morpeth to Redesmouth, where it made a junction with the Border Counties Railway.  The line opened in stages from 1862 to 1865 and a branch line to Rothbury was opened in 1870. The passenger train service on the line was ended in 1952, but continued to be used for freight until the line closed completely in 1966. Significant lenths of the track bed and some station buildings can still be seen today. Parts of the line now form part of a circular walking route.[1]
