Underhill, Kells Lane, Low Fell

Underhill is a large house at 99 Kells Lane in Low Fell, Gateshead - built in the 1860s. The inventor, Joseph Swan, lived at Underhill from 1869 until 1883. Many of Swan's most important experiments were conducted in the house, including those to do with dry plate photography and in particular his work developing the filaments for the first practical incandescent electric lamp. Underhill was the first house in England to be wired for domestic electric lighting.[1] Underhill was later used as a school, and is currently used as sheltered retirement housing. Underhill is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England.

Underhill is a large and imposing detached house, located at 99 Kells Lane in the Low Fell district of Gateshead, north-east England, United Kingdom. Built primarily from sandstone in Victorian architectural style, it was the home of Sir Joseph Wilson Swan from 1869–1883, and is the first domestic property in the world to be illuminated by electric light bulb.

Previously used as a school, it is currently used as retirement sheltered housing.
