Underhill, Kells Lane, Low Fell
Underhill is a large house at 99 Kells Lane in Low Fell, Gateshead - built in the 1860s. The inventor, Joseph Swan, lived at Underhill from 1869 until 1883. Many of Swan's most important experiments were conducted in the house, including those to do with dry plate photography and in particular his work developing the filaments for the first practical incandescent electric lamp.
