Trams in Barrow-in-Furness

  • 1881: The Barrow-in-Furness Corporation Act of 1881 authorised the construction of a tramway system in the borough.
  • 1885: The Barrow-in-Furness Tramways Company steam-operated tram services began. The first routes included Furness Abbey to the Town Hall, Barrow Steelworks, Ramsden Square, and Roose.
  • 1886: The system expanded to include Ramsden Dock Station.
  • 1898: The company went into liquidation and the tramways were taken over by the British Electric Traction Company.
  • 1904: Work to fully electrify the tram system was completed.
  • 1911, 4th August: Trams extended to Biggar Bank on Walney Island, for a day at the beach.
  • 1920: The Barrow Council took over operation of the tram service.
  • 1932, 5th April: The last tram service ran, and the system was decommissioned in favour of buses.
