The Knowe, Bardon Mill

The Knowe (aka Grandy's Knowe) is a former farm in Northumberland, located on Hallstile Bank, about 3 miles north of Bardon Mill, to the south of Hadrian's Wall. The farmhouse dates from the 18th century and the farm complex incorporates a 16th century bastle. The bastle measures 9.15m by 6.7m externally with walls up to 1.3m thick; the walls stand to an average height of 1.5m. The 1860 Northumberland Farms Index lists Grandy's Knowe under Thorngrafton Township in the ancient parish of Haltwhistle. Today, The Knowe is part of Bardon Mill Civil Parish. From 2006-9, the farm complex was rennovated for the owner by Doonan Architects Ltd. The completed project includes a dwelling for the client, a holiday cottage, an office and a large garage/storage building. The dwelling has stunning views to the west. The bastle was developed to provide a two storey structure in a contemporary design, to form a stunning centre piece to the refurbished complex. The bastle is a Grade II listed building and Scheduled Monument on the National Heritage List for England.
