The Highlander, near Belsay

The Highlander is a public house and restaurant, located on the A696 road, about 2 miles south-east of Belsay and 2 miles north-west of Ponteland. It was previously a coaching inn, dating back to the 18th century; much of the present building dates from the early 19th century. The Highlander was renovated and reopened to the public on the 14th September 2023 - after being closed for 5 years, since 2018. The building was purchased by Unveiled Venues Ltd. in 2022 and underwent a major renovation by the new owners[1]. The Highlander is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.[2] Part of the complex, at the rear of the Highlander are former farm buildings, including an early 19th century cartshed and granary, which were later converted for use a restaurant - this is separately a Grade II listed building.[3]
