The Cloister, Durham Cathedral
The Cloister is at the south side of Durham Cathedral. The Cloister is a rectanglular covered walkway, with windows on one side opening up to a grassed area known as the Cloister Garth. It was an important space for Monks, who spent many hours in the Cloister, meditating and studying manuscripts. They also provided access to other parths of the Cathedral, with doors leading to the Chapter House, Refectory, Dormatory, Library and Nave. At the centre of the Cloister Garth is the round stone lavatorium. The East Range, South Range, West Range of the Cloister, and lavatorium are seperately listed to the Cathedral, on the National Heritge List for England.
