The Bastle, High Rochester


The Bastle is a former bastlehouse located in High Rochester and situated within the defences of Bremenium Roman Fort. The Bastle dates from the 16th or early 17th century, and was altered in the late 18th or early 19th century. The bastle has walls 1.5m thick, a slit window, an original byre door now converted to a window, and a first floor doorway. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heriatage List for England.
