Stannington at War
A memorial plaque, listing the names of 35 servicemen from the parish who lost their lives in the First World War, is located in St Mary's Church in Stannington. The plaque was unveiled by Major Jasper Ridley in a service on the 16th of January 1921.[1] St Mary's Hospital, near Stannigton, was requisitioned by the military during the First World War. Following the Second World War, the names of 5 men from the parish who were killed in that conflict were added to the plaque in St Mary's Church. For the Centenery of the First World War, an additional plaque naming 36 fallen, was erected on Church Road, near the old drinking fountain, which acts as a war memorial.
