Stanley Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale

Stanley Bridge carries the A65 road over the River Lune at the south-east of Kirkby Lonsdale. The bridge and new road route to by-pass the town were built for Westmorland County Council at a cost of £20,000, and 60 men worked on the scheme. A plaque on the bridge states "Built 1931 by the Reinforced Concrete Construction Co. Ltd. Old Trafford, Manchester." The new bridge and bypass were officially opened in a ceremony on the 3rd December 1932 (the bridge was opened by Oliver Stanley, Minister for Home Affairs and the bypass by Lady Bentinck of nearby Underley Hall). The bridge replaced the medieval Devil's Bridge, which is about 150m north.
