Shotley Bridge Conservation Area
Shotley Bridge Conservation Area was designated in 1975 and the boundaries of the area have been extended three times over the years. Much of the conservation area is in the county of Northumberland. However, the majority of the buildings and population are concentrated on the eastern side of the River Derwent, which falls within the Benfieldside Ward of County Durham. The famous 18th century bridge over the river here straddles the two counties.
The conservation area includes the historic core of the village of Shotley Bridge, featuring 19th-century spa grounds. It also encompasses extensive woodland and agricultural land; the area is around 185 hectares and includes Snows Green and Elm Park. It also includes traces of its industrial past, including 17th-century sword mills.
