Senhouse Street, Maryport

Senhouse Street is one of the main streets in Maryport. It is a third of a mile long and runs from Selby Terrace in a roughly Westerly direction, down to the the bridge over the River Ellen to it's junction with Irish Street in the harbour area. It is Maryport’s main shopping street. The street is named after the Senhouse family, local land owners, who developed modern Maryport.

Humphrey Senhouse (1705-1770) inherited the Netherhall and Ellenborough estates. He sought to develop his coal trade, via the small harbour at Ellenfoot, where the River Ellen met the sea. In 1731, Humphrey married Mary Fleming, daughter and wealthy co-heir of Sir George Fleming of Rydal. In 1749 he promoted an Act of Parliamentary to improve Ellenfoot, and laid out a new town there, named "Mary Port" after his wife. The Senhouse family founded St Mary's church in the town in 1763.
