Scotch Buildings (1872 - 1956)

Scotch Buildings were a large complex of tenement housing located in the Hindpool ward of Barrow-in-Furness. They were built for the Barrow Hematite Steel Company in 1872 to house workers, at a time when there was a chronic housing shortage in the rapidly expanding town. The complex had a triangular layout, with tenements on Blake Street, Duke Street and Walney Road - joining around a central courtyard. Scotch Buildings had 260 flats which could house over 1,000 residents; it included two shops and a working men's club, which were located on the corners of the building. Scotch Buildings were finally demolished in demolished in 1956.
