Salthouse Road, Barrow-in-Furness

Salthouse Road is a major road, which runs through the Salthouse area of Barrow-in-Furness. Part of the road forms part of the A5087 route. The western end of Salthouse Road is near by Buccleuch Dock, continuing on from Strand, as part of the A5087. After about ¾km the A5087 continues as Roose Road, with Salthouse Road diverting to the east and looping round to rejoin Roose Road.

Towards the centre of Barrow, Nos. 2-10 Salthouse Road, are a terrace of houses built in 1846 for the Furness Railway Company (they are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England). Likewise, Nos. 13-20 Salthouse Road, were built in 1849 by the railway company to house their workers (also Grade II listed). St George's School, on the junction with Schools Road, was originally built by the Furness Railway Company in 1849, for employee's children (also Grade II listed). These provide a reminder of the importance of the arrival of the Furness Railway in the development of Barrow.
