Royal Naval Air Service - Whitley Bay


During World War 1 a Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) landing slip and wooden aeroplane hangers were built on fields near to St Mary's Lighthouse adjacent to what is now Whitley Bay Caravan Park. The base was operational between 1914-1916 after which it was returned to agricultural use.
