Roman Tile Kilns, near Birks Coppice

The site of two Roman tile kilns is located by Birks Coppice in Eskdale, just over 2 miles north-east of Muncaster. The remains of the kilns were first found in 1884 during the construction of the Muncaster Private Drive to Forge Bridge. The first kiln was recorded as being 3-4ft high with a semi-circular front of 4ft radius. There were archeological excavations in 1922 and in 1960-1. Today, the site consists of a small area of heavily overgrown, poorly-defined hollows, with scattered stone and burnt tile fragments. An informatin board, at grid ref SD13139861, is placed central to the kilns.[1] The site is a Scheduled Monument.
