Rolling Bridge over Ulverston Canal

This unusual rolling railway bridge carried the railway over Ulverston Canal, to the East of Ulveston. It was built for the Furness Railway Comany in 1883, designed by Frank Stileman. The rolling bridge is an innovative structure, designed to cross navigable water with minimum disturbance to shipping and without the need to construct massive earthworks and excessively steep gradients.[1] The bridge and associated accumulator tower are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
