Parish Church of St Augustine of Canterbury, Alston (3)

  • Description

"The 16th Century Derwentwater clock. This is believed commissioned by the Earl of Derwentwater, who was executed on Tower Hill on 24 February 1716 for his part in the failed 1715 Jacobite Rising. Records indicate the clock passed to Greenwich Hospital, whose Commissioners presented the clock to Alston Church in 1770. However, the clock face was then promptly lost and the mechanism (with new glass fibre face) was not finally installed in the Church until 1978." Photo by The Carlisle Kid, 2015.
