Kielder Viaduct near Kielder (2)

  • Description

"Its castellated parapet lines the route of the old Border Counties Railway over the River North Tyne. Designed by Robert Nicholson and/or John Furness Tone and opened in 1862. See here for a view from below: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2376656. The completed railway ran from Hexham to Riccarton with the aim of facilitating the movement of coal and other minerals to local industry. However, it proved not to be viable and the line closed completely in 1958." Photo by Stephen Richards, 2010.
