Melton Constable pub, Seaton Sluice

  • Description

"The pub was built in 1839 and was named in honour of the Astley family of Melton Constable in Norfolk, who inherited the Delaval estates in 1814. "September 17th 1839 - The port of Seaton Sluice was a scene of great rejoicing, in consequence of the welcome dinner given to Mr James Thompson, the landlord of the Melton Constable Hotel, lately erected there, it being more than half a century since any buildings or other improvements had been made in that town." The Local Historian's Table Book, Volume 5, p.137-8 Edited by M.A. Richardson, 1846. https://co-curate.ncl.ac.uk/seaton-sluice-1839/ An old World War II pillbox of concrete sandbag construction (the entrance and embrasures bricked-up) stands on Sandy Hill in the foreground. There are remains of a second similar pillbox further east above the harbour." Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2017.
