Remains of a flight of stairs, Milecastle 48

  • Description

"In the northeast corner of the milecastle are the remains of a flight of stairs leading up onto the wall. The stair base with its three surviving steps is unique. It can be calculated that the number of steps would have risen to about 12 feet, presumably the height of the wall-walk at this point." Photo by Mike Quinn, 2008.
