Stanhope Ford

  • Description

"Can we hope that the Stanhope Ford is now closed to motor vehicles for ever? It never did make much sense to risk this crossing of the River Wear, when taking the road round via the bridge added little more than a kilometre to the journey. There have been some scary incidents and hazardous rescue operations after people have attempted to negotiate the ford in inappropriate conditions."
