It is situated east of the Allen River and stretches north and south of the River South Tyne, but extends north of Hadrian's Wall, beyond Broomlee Lough and south as far as Plankey Mill and Plenmeller Common. The western boundary is marked by Carrsgate Burn. The border between the two parishes is mostly along Chainley Burn, which descends to the River South Tyne."
