A band (likely Hetton Silver Band) marching through Durham with their lodge and banner during the Durham Gala

Description
We recently received a large intake of archive photographs and associated ephemera as work progressed on Hetton Silver Band Hall and we present a selection here for your perusal. We also invited members of the band to tell us their memories of being in the band, and how important the hall was to the community. You can view those memories online here: http://youtu.be/HF4jfEm8AnI" >youtu.be/HF4jfEm8AnI Hetton Silver Band was founded on 1st April 1887. Land in South Market Street, in Hetton-le-Hole, was bought from Hetton Coal Company for £25 and a tin practice hut was built. The hut was replaced by a brick building in about 1912 and remained in use until 2009, when the band merged with another local band to become Durham Miners’ Association Brass Band. The now-redundant Hetton Silver Band Hall was in danger of being lost forever, until Durham Miners’ Association donated the building to Beamish. The hall was carefully dismantled in 2010/11 and moved to the Museum. In March this year, the Friends of Beamish Chairman John Grundy and ex-Hetton Silver Band member Glenis Smith cut the first turf at the Museum in preparation for the rebuilding of the hall.
