R Holland Butchers, Wallsend, Newcastle Upon On Tyne, c. 1910

Description
Another gem from the Who Do You Think You Are? Live show, and a classic occupational photograph from the early 1900s. This one belongs to Candis Ibberson and is used with her kind permission. It depicts her Great Great Grandfather Ralph Holland and Great Grandfather, also Ralph, outside their butcher's shop on the corner of Thames Street, Wallsend, Newcastle Upon On Tyne. From what I have been able to tell (see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NORTHUMBRIA/1999-08/0934833033)" >archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NORTHUMBRIA/1999-0...), although Thames St no longer exists, it was parallel to Elton St West - http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Elton+St+W,+Wallsend,+Tyne+And+Wear+NE28+8JY,+United+Kingdom&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hl=en&geocode=FZkZRwMdDH_o_w&split=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=6.881357,14.941406&hq=&hnear=Elton+St+W,+Wallsend,+Tyne+And+Wear+NE28+8JY,+United+Kingdom&ll=54.990967,-1.539631&spn=0.005115,0.012939&z=17" >maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Elton+St+W,+Wallsend,+Tyne+And+W... Candis thinks that the date is c. 1910, but a quick look at the 1901 census shows that the younger Ralph was already 14 by then, which I think is quite close to the age he looks here. So either the image is actually earlier, or perhaps it is the younger sibling Walter, b. 1893? It's a divided back postcard, so unless it was an earlier image printed somewhat later, this would suggest a date of 1902 or later. -
