Carlisle citadel

Description
"The citadel consists of two rectangular buildings on either side of English Street with circular towers on the corners of each of the buildings facing away from the city centre. The view here is from outside of what once was the city wall across Court Square towards the eastern tower. The citadel was originally built in the 1540s, along with the castle http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6148200 on the other side of the city, as a gate in the city wall. It was largely destroyed when Carlisle was besieged by the Scots in the 1640s. The present buildings were built to house the criminal and civil courts of the city in the 1810s when the city walls were demolished." Photo by Rudi Winter, 2018. -
