Gallowgate from Blackett Street

  • Description

"The name doesn't refer to a gate in the medieval Town Walls, although New Gate was quite close to this junction. It is rather a name for the road, or 'geat' used to take convicted criminals to the gallows on Newcastle Town Moor. Tyne and Wear HER (6507): Newcastle, Gallowgate http://www.twsitelines.info On the right is [[1695445]] and on the left brick-built shops and offices of 1898-9 designed by Oliver & Leeson with a prominent corner onion-dome. Newcastle's medieval town wall is embedded inside the shops. Tyne and Wear HER (8817): Newcastle, Gallowgate, Nos. 1 - 15 http://www.twsitelines.info" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2010.
