"....The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Knowe Presbyterian Church (latterly the United Reformed Church) by Messrs Beattie & Co and was unveiled on 28 December 1919 with Mrs Thomas Armstrong in attendance...."
