World War I memorial at the Knowe United Reformed Church, Bewcastle

  • Description

"The wider location of the memorial is shown in this photo [[3919484]] . It is evident that the memorial and plinth have been renovated very recently. The memorial is inscribed 'In honour of the men of this parish who fell in the Great War 1914-18'. Twenty men are named - see [[4029346]] . Prior to the formation of the United Reformed Church in 1972 (see Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Reformed_Church ), The Knowe was a Presbyterian church. But the war memorial is apparently non-denominational, as the same names are listed on the one at St Cuthbert's (C of E) Parish Church, Bewcastle - for details see Roll of Honour website http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Cumberland/Bewcastle.html ."
