The travel of each ram is 14 feet. The maximum outside travel of the pendulum jib is 28 feet; butthis distance can be regulated to any length, according to thewidth of the vessel, by means of valves and a fusee barrel. Thelength of the main jib is 63 feet, at the end of which the pendulumjib, 50 feet long, is hinged. At ground-level is placed the wooden water-tank fed withtowns water, and fixed alongside a pair of steam cylinders (induplicate) 5 and 12 inches in diameter, working two separate 2\-inch rams, forcing water at 80 pounds per square inch into the 180 COAL-SHIPMENT AND THE LAYIXG-OT/T OF STAITHE HEADS. accumulator, and thus starting it. The accumulator weighs 80tons, and forces to a height of 14 feet by a ram 15 inches in dia-meter, at which point the pressure is caught by the main ramoperating the crane. Pumping power is derived from two tubularboilers, each 12 feet long and 4J feet in diameter. The plant and crane were designed and erected bv the makers,Messrs.
